About the Film

THE RETURN

"He told them he'd be back. He just didn't come back the way they expected."

The Story

Close-up of hands gripping prison bars behind metal grates.

Jonathan Irons was arrested at 16, convicted, and sentenced to 65 years. He served time at the Missouri State Penitentiary — dubbed by Time Magazine as "the bloodiest 47 acres in America" — and later at Jefferson City Correctional Center, a Level 5 maximum security facility.

Two decades across two maximum security facilities. His faith, the ITC program, and Maya Moore sustaining him through incarceration. The sunshine request, the hidden evidence, the exoneration after 23 years.

The choice to return — not as a victim, but as a messenger. The concert at JCCC with Lecrae and Tedashii, the GLA at Algoa, and what it all means.

"I was back. But not in the way they expected."

About ODBM Documentary

The Filmmakers

Our Daily Bread Ministries' documentary arm brings stories of faith, courage, and human dignity to screens worldwide. Rasool Berry — pastor, author, and media producer — serves as the driving creative force behind The Return, which he produced and narrates. His conviction that Jonathan's story needed to be told on film is what made this documentary possible.

This passage sits at the center of Jonathan's journey — and the film's title. A return, in the truest sense, is not going back to who you were. It's going back to strengthen those still in the fire.

The Scripture at the Heart of It

"Satan demanded to sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith should not fail. And when you have returned, strengthen your brothers."

Luke 22:31–34
